SUMMARY:INBRE Virtual Network presentation
DESCRIPTION:You are welcome to attend (via Zoom) the first INBRE Virtual Network presentation hosted by INBRE at ISU. \nSpeaker: Dr. Mihail Mitov\, Asst. Professor Biology\, Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine\, Meridian\, ED \nTopic: Molecular determinants of muscle cellular biomechanics and bioenergetics \nDate: November 8\, 2022\nTime: 4:00 pm Mountain\, 3:00 pm Pacific\nPlace: Zoom\nMeeting ID: 864 9771 0964\nPasscode: 460005 \nMore info: This presentation will overview some of the know molecular factors that affect the muscle’s cellular biomechanics and bioenergetics. The main focus will be on the contributors to active and passive muscle tension or stiffness. Additionally\, I will address some of the factors of cellular bioenergetics that could affect muscle health or disease (will use the doxorubicin cardiomyopathy as a way to address the role of oxidative stress\, oxidative phosphorylation\, and glycolysis). I will address some of the current gaps in research capabilities that we face in Idaho and how could improve muscle biology research through institutional collaborations. My goal is to present what might be possible and seek new collaborators that could help the creation of new project lines. \n

SUMMARY:Write Winning Grant Proposals
DESCRIPTION:Alaska INBRE is offering a free\, online grant writing webinar to up to 10 registrants per RAIN state (Hawaii\, Idaho\, Montana\, Nevada\, New Mexico\, Wyoming). \nThis webinar will be conducted by John Robertson and will emphasize both NIH and NSF applications. \n  \nRegistration is due before noon on May 9. Register HERE. \n\n  \nWrite Winning Grant Proposals: Core\, NIH\, NSF \nA Virtual Seminar in Three Parts \n  \nPart 1-CORE: Mon.\, May 23\, 2022  9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time  \nPart 2-NIH: Tues.\, May 24\, 2022   9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time \nPart 3-NSF: Wed.\, May 25\, 2022  9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time \n  \nPresented by John D. Robertson\, Ph.D.  \nGrant Writers’ Seminars and Workshops \nThis widely acclaimed seminar comprehensively addresses both practical and conceptual aspects of writing competitive grant proposals.  Emphasis is given to such things as idea development\, understanding the role (and mindset) of your reviewers\, and strategies and tips for each major section of a grant proposal.  Participants are taught to write with a linear progression of logic\, which leads reviewers through an application. Strategies designed to merit a fundable score are emphasized. \nThis seminar will focus on proposal writing for federal agencies (NIH and NSF) with a required CORE session in the morning on May 23.  Then you may choose to attend either the NIH section on May 24\, or the NSF session on May 25.  It is possible you may choose to attend both the NIH and the NSF sessions in addition to the CORE session.  Regardless of funding agency\, the majority of this content will be relevant and usable for individuals applying to various funding entities (e.g.\, private foundations\, professional organizations\, and state agencies).  \nAll participants will receive an extensive electronic handout\, as well as a field-relevant copy of The Grant Application Writer’s Workbook.  The workbook is designed to facilitate application of what is learned in the seminar to the writing of each attendee’s individual grant proposal after attending the seminar sessions. \nEmphasis is placed on doing the “extra” things that can make the difference between being funded versus not. Regardless of the target agency\, participants are taught to write with a linear progression of logic\, which leads reviewers through an application without them knowing that they are being led. It is noted that applicants are writing for two different audiences – the assigned reviewers\, who read the application in its entirety\, and non-assigned reviewers who may have read little\, or none\, of the proposal before the meeting of the review panel. \nThis seminar is appropriate for junior through senior faculty and grant-writing staff.  Experienced faculty and staff may use the seminar as an overall refresher\, for new ideas on gaining a competitive edge\, and/or for strategies in how to mentor others in proposal writing. Junior faculty may use the seminar as a primer in proposal writing that helps demystify the components of a proposal and the process of writing one strategically.  \nNote—This seminar will be presented as a three-part virtual livestreamed seminar. You are required to attend the CORE session before attending either the NIH and/or the NSF sessions.  The CORE session is critical for maximal understanding and future usage of the directed writing approach\, followed by attending the NSF and/or the NIH session.     \n  \nDr. John Robertson holds a Doctorate in Pharmacology/Toxicology and has been an Associate Member at Grant Writers’ Seminars & Workshops since 2010.  In 2017 he became the Managing Member.  He has been the recipient of competitive extramural funding from both the NIH and non-federal sources.  He has authored 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and three book chapters.  In addition\, he has been a member of grant review panels\, a reviewer for a number of biomedical journals\, and served on editorial boards.  He has also been routinely recognized for excellence in teaching.

SUMMARY:New Mexico INBRE Summer Undergraduate Research Program
DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico INBRE Summer Experience (NISE) programs offer different options for undergraduate students to get summer research experience and training.  The summer work experience will conclude in a presentation of results at a research symposium\, held during the first week of August. APPLICATION DEADLINE: February\, 1st\, 2021 \n1. NISE-Bootcamp:** The goal is to increase student understanding of biomedical research and enhance their career development through a mixture of laboratory experiences and lecture-based activities on the New Mexico State University (NMSU) campus. Students between Sophomore and Junior Year (or those expecting to be 2 academic years away from a BS/BA degree) with little to no research experience will work with researchers at NMSU\, including workshops to develop bench and college-success skills. NISE-Bootcamp will provide students with an authentic research experience to prepare them to pursue a career in science. NISE bootcamp will help students move from an academic understanding of science to hands-on experience with research techniques and concepts. Students with no research experience will be PAID to conduct Microbiology research at NMSU. Housing on NMSU campus will be included.  An important expected outcome of this program is having students apply for and conduct mentored research internships the summer after they participate in Bootcamp. Apply Now  \n2. NISE-Internship:*** The goal is to enhance student research skills and prepare participants for graduate education in biomedical research and/or health research careers. Students\, ideally between their Junior and Senior Year (or those entering their final/senior year as an undergraduate)\, planning to apply to graduate school in biomedical/behavioral sciences in the next year with research experience will be PAID and matched with NMSU or University of New Mexico (UNM) faculty to conduct independent biomedical research projects at NMSU or UNM. Housing on NMSU campus will be included. NISE-internship will help students identify appropriate graduate programs\, and gain the application skills to make them competitive for entry into advanced degrees. An important and expected outcome is for students to apply to biomedical or behavioral graduate programs during the academic year following their NISE Internship. Apply Now  \n3. NISE-Bioinformatics****: Students interested in researching the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and other pandemics will be paid to engage virtually with scientists and bioinformaticians at the National Center for Genome Resources to develop critical-thinking\, research and basic bioinformatics skills. Apply Now
