Summary:

This research is located within the Advanced Nanomaterials and Manufacturing Lab (ANML). The ANML uses both “top-down” and “bottom-up” techniques to synthesize atomic layer building blocks for the design of materials, devices, and systems with applications in the healthcare, communication, and energy sectors. We are interested in developing materials and tools that will advance the field of biomedical and tissue engineering.

Our current biomedical engineering research interests include:

  • The growth and characterization of graphene/ graphene foam
  • The respective application of graphene foam for tissue engineering
  • Characterization of bio-scaffolds made from these 2D materials through traditional methods

Projects: The summer research project will involve aspects of both engineering and biomolecular research. Throughout the summer, the student will investigate the practical application of extracellular matrix (ECM) protein coated graphene foam for the growth of various cell lines. A portion of the study will focus on creating the best environment for cell growth by examining several variables of interest. The student will then make bio-scaffolds that will undergo characterization and testing. Additional samples will be made to study the cultures under mechanical and electrical stimulation. A fellow with experience will also have the opportunity to define a research project closely related to this research. The fellow will become acquainted with the following methods: cell culture, confocal fluorescence microscopy, qPCR, chemical vapor deposition growth of graphene foam, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy. The fellow will partner with the research mentor and meet peers involved in biomedical research.
