JOB TITLE:

Education/Outreach Coordinator – Research Scientist in Bioinformatics

JOB PURPOSE:

RESEARCH SCIENTIST IN BIOINFORMATICS Department: The NIH-funded grant Wyoming INBRE Bioinformatics Core is seeking to hire a Research Scientist. The position will support the bioinformatics research and education activities of the Core, and will include service (60%), teaching (30%), and research (10%) components.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Core serves a state-wide network that includes the University of Wyoming (Laramie and Casper), as well as several community colleges, so some travel within the state is associated with the position.

  • The successful applicant will collaborate with faculty across the state to develop curricula and training in bioinformatics skills with college and university science instructors so that they can effectively integrate bioinformatics into their science curricula and help their students prepare for the 21st century workplace, and these activities will constitute the service component of the positions.
  • The research component is anticipated to mostly consist of co-authored publications arising from these collaborative projects. However, as long as the service goals of the positions are achieved, maintenance of an independent research program will be encouraged.
  • The teaching component will consist of organizing and conducting formal training activities (short courses, workshops), as well as one-on-one training sessions with researchers.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:  

  •  Participate in planning, maintenance and achievement of WY INBRE goals.
  • Coordinate and attend special events as appropriate.
  • Along with other staff maintain the Bioinformatics Core’s wet and computational laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  M.Sc. in a relevant discipline

Experience: None

Required education, licensure, certification, registration or other equipment: Valid driver’s license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy found at: https://www.uwyo.edu/risk/_files/docs/offical-vehicle-policy.pdf

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Ph.D. in a relevant discipline
  • Teaching experience including development of teaching materials
  • Experience with successful interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Broad knowledge in informatics approaches to data analysis
  • Evidence of successful mentorship and supervision
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills that facilitates an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and all-around positive environment
  • Experience with -omics methods including proficiency in bioinformatics analysis of -omics data.
  • Experience in Command Line Interface and a programming language or other statistical software
