Summary: Application of advanced scanning probe and atomic force microscopy (SPM/AFM) techniques to characterize systems of interest, including DNA, proteins, lipid bilayers, cell membranes, nuclei, and cells.

Minimum Courses: Introductory level biology, chemistry, physics, and/or materials science, along with at least a year of calculus.

Projects: Use a combination of AFM and AFM cantilever-based nanoindentation to characterize the morphology and nanomechanical properties of bioscaffolds, cell nuclei, and cells in physiological buffer.
