Summary:  Gut-microbiota-brain axis in neuroinflammation Neurotransmitter balances in the gut and effects on neuroinflammation and immunomodulation.

Minimum Classes: Microbiology; biochemistry; immunology (preferred)

Projects:
1. Impact of GABA- and glutamate-producing gut bacteria on animal models of multiple sclerosis. Techniques: general microbiology techniques; molecular techniques, such as PCR, RT-qPCR. Immunology techniques, such as flow cytometry, ELISA. Animal handling and disease monitoring.

2. In vivo and in vitro immunomodulation by natural isoprenols. Techniques: molecular techniques, such as PCR, RT-qPCR. Immunology techniques include flow cytometry, ELISA; Animal handling and disease monitoring (model of MS or model of IBD); Histology, and possibly confocal microscopy.

3. Characterization of the effects of GABA- and glutamate-producing bacteria on zebrafish neurodevelopment and responses to stress. Techniques: zebrafish embryo and larvae handling; molecular techniques, such as PCR, RT-qPCR; histology.
